Pilot Training — Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about becoming a pilot? Get straight answers to the questions every aspiring aviator asks — from ERAH Aviation Academy’s expert team in Turkey.
Entry Requirements
Pilot licence age thresholds under ICAO standards are as follows:
- PPL (Private Pilot Licence): Training can begin from age 16.
- CPL (Commercial Pilot Licence): Minimum age 18.
- ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence): Minimum age 21.
- Upper age: No legal upper limit exists for obtaining a pilot licence. Turkish Airlines recruits pilots up to age 45; many international carriers set their own threshold around 40.
If you are over 45, a career as a Flight Instructor (FI) at flight schools or universities remains a well-compensated and rewarding path.
The following documents are required to enrol at ERAH Aviation Academy:
- Class 1 Medical Certificate from a DGCA (SHGM)-authorised hospital
- High school diploma or equivalent — e-Government printout, 2 copies
- Criminal record certificate issued within the last month, stating “No Archive Record” — e-Government, 2 copies
- Intermediate-level English (no certificate required)
- Basic maths and physics knowledge
A university degree is not required. For full application details, contact the ERAH admissions team.
Yes. Applicants must hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate issued by a DGCA-authorised hospital. The assessment covers vision, hearing, cardiovascular and neurological tests. We strongly recommend obtaining your medical certificate before committing to the programme.
Should a medical condition prevent you from continuing the training after enrolment, the cancellation procedures outlined in your contract will be applied and a fee refund processed accordingly.
Training Programmes & Duration
| Programme | Duration | Theory | Flight & Sim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated ATPL | 14–15 months | 823 hours | 208 hours |
| Modular ATPL | 16–18 months | 660 hours | ~208 hours |
| ATPL for Employees | Flexible | Online-heavy | 46.5 hours+ |

Duration may vary based on weather conditions, individual flight continuity and examination performance.
Integrated ATPL is a full-time, zero-to-hero programme for candidates with no prior flight experience. All training — theory, simulator and flight — is conducted in a coordinated, uninterrupted sequence at ERAH’s campus. Accommodation is included. This is the fastest route to an ATPL.
Modular ATPL breaks the programme into independent modules that can be taken at your own pace — ideal for working professionals or university students. Up to 90% of theoretical training is delivered online. Modules can even be split across different approved organisations.
The ATPL syllabus — aligned with ICAO and EASA standards — covers 14 subjects totalling 660 hours:
- Air Law · General Aircraft Knowledge · Instruments
- Mass & Balance · Aircraft Performance · Flight Planning
- Human Performance & Limitations · Meteorology
- General Navigation · Radio Navigation
- Operational Procedures · Principles of Flight
- VFR Communications · IFR Communications
Delivery split: 50% digital (tablet) · 40% virtual classroom · 10% in-class
English & Language Requirements
No English proficiency certificate is required to enrol at ERAH. A basic working knowledge of English is sufficient to follow the coursework. All lessons are delivered in both Turkish and English.
- ATPL theoretical knowledge exams at DGCA centres are conducted in English.
- Aircraft manuals, procedure handbooks and ATC communications are in English.
- You will naturally develop aviation English throughout the programme.
Training While Working or Studying
Yes — ERAH’s Special ATPL for Employees and Modular ATPL are built around working professionals and students.
- Up to 90% of theory online — sessions run 18:00–22:30 on weekday evenings.
- Limited make-up lessons available for missed sessions.
- Flight training timetable arranged flexibly around your availability.
- PPL phase requires approximately 5.5 weeks of dedicated attendance.
ERAH’s Istanbul facility also enables you to complete theoretical and simulator training without travelling to Isparta until the flight phases begin.

Exams, Licences & Certification
ATPL theory exams are held in English at official DGCA (SHGM) examination centres across Turkey.
- Each of the 14 subjects is examined upon completion of that module.
- Exams consist of 120 multiple-choice questions; a score of 75% or above is required to pass.
- Candidates have a maximum of 6 examination sittings total.
- Failing a single subject on 4 occasions triggers a mandatory 2-week refresher course before re-sitting.
Candidates who pass all theoretical exams and complete their flight training hours take a 1.5-hour skill test with a DGCA-authorised examiner. The test is conducted over ERAH’s home airspace at Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport. A successful skill test entitles the candidate to their licence. An examiner fee of 250 TL per test is payable to the DGCA-assigned examiner.
Yes. Licence conversion is processed through the DGCA (SHGM). Required documents:
- Petition addressed to SHGM
- Original licence
- Logbook (flight record)
- Class 1 Medical Certificate
- Criminal record certificate
- Graduation certificate
Because ERAH trains to ICAO and EASA standards, ERAH-issued licences carry international validity. Pilots trained abroad may also complete remaining modules at ERAH.
Career & Employment
No flight school can legally guarantee employment. However, ERAH’s career outcomes are among the strongest in Turkey:
- 98% of graduates are accepted by the first airline they apply to.
- Active protocol agreements with Turkish Airlines (THY) and SunExpress.
- Boeing and Airbus forecasts project a sustained global pilot shortage through at least 2035.
Learn more on the Why ERAH page.
ERAH graduates are employed across a wide range of aviation sectors:
- Scheduled carriers — Turkish Airlines, SunExpress and international operators
- Charter and private jet operators
- Cargo airlines
- Flight schools and academies as Flight Instructors (FI)
- University aviation departments
Costs, Fees & Payment
Yes. Training fees can be paid module by module, with each module billed separately. Detailed pricing and payment plan options are available directly from the ERAH admissions team. Contact us for current fees.
Two additional charges fall outside the core tuition fee:
- DGCA exam fee: 50 TL per subject (via exchange system).
- Examiner fee: 250 TL per skill test, payable to the DGCA-assigned check pilot.
For the Integrated ATPL, accommodation at the Isparta campus is included. Modular programme students make their own accommodation arrangements; ERAH has agreements with several hotels near the campus.
If you need to withdraw — whether for personal, medical or other reasons — the cancellation and refund procedures set out in your enrolment contract are applied. Medical withdrawal is also eligible for the refund process. We recommend reviewing the contract terms with the ERAH team before enrolment.

Credit Transfer & Previous Training
Yes. The modular system allows students to complete individual modules at any approved organisation and continue the remainder elsewhere. If you have already completed certain modules at another approved school, you can join ERAH’s Modular ATPL programme and finish your training at Isparta. Contact ERAH to assess your situation and plan the remaining modules.
General Questions
No. A high school diploma or equivalent is all that is required to enrol in ATPL training at ERAH. No university degree, no military background — purely civilian training leading to a fully recognised commercial pilot licence under ICAO and EASA standards.
Yes — both Boeing and Airbus project that the global pilot shortage will persist through at least 2035. Turkey is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, and carriers such as Turkish Airlines (THY) and SunExpress continue active recruitment. The airline industry’s structural demand for qualified ATPL holders makes this one of the most secure long-term career paths in aviation.
